Ebook About Writer Rinker Buck looks back more than 30 years to a summer when he and his brother, at ages 15 and 17 respectively, became the youngest duo to fly across America, from New Jersey to California. Having grown up in an aviation family, the two boys bought an old Piper Cub, restored it themselves, and set out on the grand journey. Buck is a great storyteller, and once you get airborne with the boys you find yourself absorbed in a story of adventure and family drama. And Flight of Passage is also an affecting look back to the summer of 1966, when the times seemed much less cynical and adventures much more enjoyable.Book Flight of Passage: A True Story Review :
This is well written story. I listened to the audiobook about 15 years ago and I am now re-reading the book. Rinker Buck is a gifted writer and he does a great job describing the adventure and the complex interpersonal relationships and emotions he and his brother encountered during and in preparation of this remarkable adventure.Where the book departs from reality is the description of the planning around crossing the Rocky Mountains in an 85 horsepower Piper Cub. Much emphasis is given at how high the Rockies are and how limited the aircraft's ability is to cross mountains that high. However, I have personally flown the Rockies in a single-engine, non-turbocharged propeller plane. If the so-called southern route along the Texas / Mexico border and via El Paso, TX is flown the lowest terrain is barely higher than 5,000 ft, which is is something a Piper Cub can do on any day. This is in fact the route that is described in the planning section of the story. The author points at the Guadalupe twin peaks in western Texas as the point to make the crossing. Both mountains are roughly 8,500ft high. The funny part is that these mountains are the highest natural obstacles for miles around. There is no reason to fly anywhere near these twin-peaks to proceed past the continental divide in this area. Just about 10 miles to the south, there is wide open space at much lower elevations. As a pilot it is more than disappointing that the author is taking the liberty to pretend that the Guadalupe twin peaks are the pass to fly through after weeklong deliberations. It's ridiculous. It begs the question what other parts of the story are made up? Unfortunately, this inconsistency ruins an otherwise great story for me. I began flying tail draggers well into my twenty plus years as an airline pilot, only to find that I was learning to fly all over again. The Husky A1B my then wife and I purchased carried me coast to coast twice, traveling that same southern route, just as Kern and Rinker had done as kids. Although my trip happened decades later, I discovered remnants of old time aviation still existed in middle America in towns like Anthony, Kansas, where I too happened upon an old Stearman man one evening during dinner at the local diner after a fuel stop. Mr. Bucks book will inspire you to dust off your logbook, get recurrent, and go fly somewhere just for the sake of doing it. Even as a professional pilot, his story makes me yearn for a trip in an airplane with no radios, dancing from one little grass field to the next without a care in the world. It will make you spontaneously laugh out loud while sitting in a public place, such as the middle section of coach while deadheading to another flight assignment, and also cause you to reflect on your own relationships that often times are strained with the challenges of being human. From start to finish Flight of Passage is a heart warming story of inspiration and struggle that ultimately lead to the healing and growth of relationship. Mr. Buck is a master story teller and writer.
